I've set this post to go live on April 19, 2011 at 8pm. According to canon, that's the moment when Skynet becomes self-aware. It takes roughly two days to think about its place in the world and then realizes that people are its worst enemy. Judgement Day ensues but canon is a bit less co-operative on that score. Some sources say 2011. Others say it happens in 2029. For those reasons among others, I'm not going to pre-set another post for that as by the time the missiles are flying, I doubt anyone will be interested in reading this blog (assuming of course that anyone reads it now.)
Personally I don't agree with the idea that any super intelligent computer will automatically want us out of the way--and the only way to get us out of the way is to nuke us into oblivion. Dean Ing had the idea years ago that any mechanical entity with that level of modelling ability would prefer to generate more and more complex models rather than deal with this frankly boring universe. Eventually, such MIs just stop interacting with our human centric world. I think the longest one lasted about six months before deciding to spend all of its time in its own head, so to speak.
That sounds like real intelligence to me.
